Welcome to the fifth edition of El Paso Rugby’s Monthly Newsletter!
Where we keep you updated on all things El Paso Rugby. We’re excited to have you along for the journey! Check out what we got up to in May.
Off Season, On Point
We all took some well-deserved time off and rested at the beginning of May. Check out what some of the Jackalopes were up to during the break.
Try Rugby Day 2.0
After such a successful first Try It Day in January, we decided to do it again to kick off our summer season. We had a great turnout on a beautiful, cloudy Sunday. The returning squad of Jackalopes welcomed a dozen new friends at Saipan Ledo Park. Most were brand new to the sport but a couple were experienced ruggers returning to the game or looking for a club for the summer. We even had a few athletes from the Young Women’s Leadership Academy join us – along with their parents as an enthusiastic fan club.
Everyone worked hard and put in consistent effort for three straight hours. Along with water breaks, there were plenty of smiles and laughs the whole time. Players were learning technical skills and killing it at the drills, but the real fun came when a little competition was added to the mix in relays, ball wrestling, touch, and of course a boat race.
Our sponsor bar, Texas Street Cantina Grill, graciously hosted the social afterwards. The quesadillas, tacos, BLTs, and drinks were flowing as the ruggers relaxed on the back patio. It’s the perfect rugby spot and we’re so grateful to Texas Street for their support. Everyone got to know each other a little better and some healthy competition developed over beer bridge and straw game.
El Paso Roller Derby
You may know we have a few cross-over athletes from roller derby. Many thanks to the support that El Paso Roller Derby has given us from the beginning of our journey. The Jackalopes showed up in force at the May roller derby game to support Speeding Beauty (aka Bianca Ochoa) and The Crash Test Dollies. Bee whipped right around those skaters and had several nice hits while we cheered as her adoring fans in the stands. It was a fun spectacle to be a part of and we’d definitely recommend you check out their next game!
Rainbow Fun Times at the Fun Fair
The Jackalopes volunteered at the Fun Fair for the Borderland Rainbow Center. They helped set up booths and direct folks around. The fair was designed to help bring together companies and services with the LGBTQ community and allies. The Borderland Rainbow Center is a critical resource for the LGBTQ community – providing support groups, therapy, food banks, and various other services that make a huge impact on individuals in El Paso. They’re always looking for more volunteers and help with the many projects they are running. Reach out and see how you can get involved!
