Jackalopes in January: Our First Month

Welcome to the first edition of El Paso Rugby’s Monthly Newsletter!

We’ll keep you updated on all things Jackalope and provide a Look Ahead as an opportunity for Members (including our Social Members) to help inform in the future of the club. We’re excited to have you along for the journey! Now let’s talk about January.

Our First Rugby Try It Day

The Jackalopes held their first ever Rugby Try It Day – instead of a Try Out Day, get it? We had over a dozen people come out and learn the basics of rugby. We went over passing, catching, running lines, 3v2, and then moved on to contact with rucking and stationary tackling. Of course, there was also some fitness and circuits but we blocked that out of our memory. We put it all together at the end with touch rugby and everyone got a taste for what the game feels like.

A quick boat race (Kerry’s team won – Susan’s team lost and no one was surprised) and then we were off to the bar. Shout out to Craft Rhythm and Brews for hosting our social. They have seriously good craft beer. Thank You to La Burra for their delicious tacos de bistec, camarón, and alambre.

We have amazing photos of the event thanks to Sandra O'hara of SweetOH Photography. Her work makes us look way more glamorous than we are and we are super grateful.

It was an inspiring day with so many athletes getting a taste of rugby. Many are coming out to practices now and are on their way to becoming the first group of rookie Jackalopes.

MLK Jr. Day Volunteering

On MLK Jr Day, a few Jackalopes got together to volunteer with El Pasoans Fighting Hunger Food Bank. We stocked food, moved boxes, and greeted people coming in to get supplies from the “food pharmacy” part of the food bank. It was a rewarding couple of hours and we hope to return again soon. They are always in need of helping hands if you have a free morning or afternoon!

Bonfire and Watch Party

We all got together to watch the 2017 World Cup final match of New Zealand vs England, talk rugby with the new recruits, drink and be merry. The bonfire got going and we enjoyed getting to know one another while making a good dent in the Dos X stash. Can’t wait to get on the pitch with this crew of goblins, werewolves, and Tony Pafumi scorners.

Look Ahead: February Matches and Playlist

This will be a Member Only Section in future newsletters.

We’re getting ready to take this show on the road – literally, we have to travel far and wide to find rugby in this area. We are in talks with other teams to get a friendly match scheduled and are looking to attend a 7s tournament later this Spring.

Want to help us get pumped up for our first match? Suggest a song for our pump up

playlist which we’ll share with you in February.

Archived monthly newsletters will be posted to our website at www.elpasorugby.com with the exception of the Look Ahead sections which will only be shared with members - including Social Members - who will have a voice in setting the direction of the club.
