Rugby Weekend in Colorado
ROAD TRIP! The Jackalopes traveled 10hrs up to Colorado Springs, CO to play Pikes Peak in July. Your typical team van shenanigans ensued including games of MASH, serious sing-a-longs to a co-created playlist, and stops for “local groceries” in Colorado. Check out our Colorado trip TikTok!
We made it all the way to the hotel – and then realized it was terrible and drove down the street to another hotel. Would recommend: Holiday Inn Express on Spruce Street. Chilled pool, heated Jacuzzi and free continental breakfast. Bonus that both of their front desk fellas were from El Paso.
For Saturday, we decided on an afternoon kickoff to allow a little extra rest for the late car which didn’t get in until 1am – troopers. We had a friendly match that started off with 12s and finished with 10s.
The grass was lush and green – making for a uniquely soft landing for the Jackalopes who are more accustomed to hard sand/grass turf. El Paso Rugby was working hard all over the pitch even as they struggled to breath at the high elevations of Colorado Springs. We successfully worked together to make big tackles and break aways. Many thanks to Pikes Peak’s experienced front row for helping our new players get their scrumming form down.
This was the first ever rugby match for Logan Nazario, Alex Silva and Savanna Sullivan. It was also the first rugby match with El Paso Rugby for Salma “Socks” Lopez, Sarah Meier, and Hannah Peterson. They put their bodies on the line and did a fantastic job together. It was a great start all around and we’re excited to build on it in the coming months.
Congratulations to Player of the Match: Salma “Socks” Lopez. Selected for her excellent vision for the field, smart decision making with the ball, and killer runs. Socks had her first try with El Paso Rugby and as tradition would have it, she shot the boot at the social (and rocked that too!).
Congratulations also goes to our Silent Force: Hannah Peterson. Selected for her tireless support of teammates on break aways to ruck and receive off loads. She was all over the field making hits and consistently contributing to our forward momentum.
Final congratulations go to the Player of the Match selected by Pikes Peak: Susan Lackey, leading the team at scrum half and making a spectacular somersault try to kick off the Jackalope's first score of the match!
Thank you to Pikes Peak for a fun social with excellent craft beer at Storybook Brewing right next to the pitch. El Paso Rugby came in blazing for the Middle School Dance theme – complete with messy eyeliner and awkward skirts. After a few hours our fluffle worked their way back to the hotel for some showers only to rally and meet the Pikes Peak players out for a full night of fun in Colorado Springs.
Yes, the van ride on Sunday was early, far too early for some. A simple miscalculation on gas mileage meant we barely made it to the first planned gas station with one mile left in the tank. 10hrs and many snacks and laughs later we made our way back to El Paso just before dinnertime with full hearts and deeper friendships.
We love you all!
